Some trips are about seeing everything. This one was about feeling everything.
As a part of this year's taking back the spirit of Christmas by gifting experiences, my oldest daughter and I spent three nights and four days at Southern Cross Ranch in Madison, Georgia—an all-inclusive guest ranch experience that delivered something rare: complete disconnection from the daily grind and total immersion in horseback riding, nature, and quality time together.
If you're looking for a way to unplug, slow down, and be present with the people you love, here's what a real guest ranch experience looks like—and why you don't have to travel across the country to find it.
Why Southern Cross Ranch
There few authentic guest ranches east of the Mississippi. Southern Cross is the real deal.
Located in Madison, Georgia (about an hour from Atlanta), this working ranch offers twice-daily horseback riding, chef-prepared meals, and a cozy atmosphere that makes you forget what day it is—in the best possible way.
We went December 26-29, just the two of us, looking for an experience that couldn't be replicated sitting through our usual routines.
We found it.
The Accommodations: Cozy, Spacious, Thoughtfully Designed
We stayed in a two-king room in the guest house—spacious, private bathroom, incredibly comfortable and cozy. But the real magic was in the shared spaces.
What's Available to Guests:
- Multiple living areas with fireplaces
- Game room
- Dining hall
- Guest kitchen for private snacks and beverages
- Balconies and patios
- Pool (for summer visits)
- Direct access to pastures where you can visit and pet the horses anytime
The vibe? Rustic, clean, and as an extra special treat during our visit—beautifully decorated for the holidays.
The Horseback Riding: Twice Daily, Expertly Guided
This is what you come for, and Southern Cross delivers.
How It Works:
- Riding happens twice a day: morning and afternoon
- Each ride lasts about 2 hours, depending on whether you stay with a guide or split off on your own
- The operation is incredibly well-organized—everyone gets saddled and ready quickly
- The guides choose your horse based on skill and experience (they're all incredibly trained, beautiful, and well cared for)
- Trails wind through expansive woods, cross creeks, and offer plenty of opportunities to trot and canter
- Return riders have the option to ride without a guide as long as you have a buddy (horses don't count!)

What the Riding Feels Like:
Even in the bare trees of winter, the trails were gorgeous. Quiet. Peaceful. The kind of quiet where you can hear your horse's hooves on the ground and your own breath matching the rhythm.
My standout moment? Cantering for the first time and feeling the freedom of running through the woods. After the first ride, I felt confident and comfortable enough to truly let go and enjoy the rest of the rides.
For my daughter, it was the opportunity to ride independently without a guide—staying quiet and just immersing ourselves in the experience. That shared silence was unexpected and special in its own way.
The Horses:
These aren't rental horses going through the motions. They're trained, responsive, and clearly well cared for. You can feel the difference.
Very well trained. You can't complete with dinner time--there's a hilarious video of Cheyenne and me struggling against each other as she decided the ride was over and it was time to head back to the gate—no matter what I wanted. We went in circles for quite some time while my daughter captured every moment, laughing the entire time.
A Typical Day at the Ranch
Here's what our rhythm looked like:
Morning:
- Breakfast in the dining hall
- Get ready for the morning ride
- Choose your horse, tack up, ride for 2 hours
- Return to the guest house to clean up and take a quick nap (horseback riding is tiring!)
Midday:
- Lunch
- Walk the property, ride bikes between the guest house and stables
- Rest, read, visit with the ranch cats
Afternoon:
- Afternoon ride
- Wander to the pastures to pet the horses (and let your mother take photos!)
- Shower and decompress
- Dinner
Evening:
- Reading, writing, or watching a show in bed
- Early to sleep (all that fresh air and riding catches up with you)
We rested a lot. We needed it. And it felt incredible.
The Food: Chef-Prepared, Buffet Style, Surprisingly Excellent
The owner is a trained chef, and it shows.
Meals are served buffet-style in a cozy dining hall with both family tables and private seating options. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner happen at set times, and the quality was a pleasant surprise—we were well fed and never went hungry.
What's Included:
- Three chef-prepared meals daily
- 24-hour access to snacks and soft drinks
- Guest kitchen if you want to bring your own beverages or special items
The food alone would make this worth it. Add in everything else, and you've got an all-inclusive experience that rivals resorts charging triple the price.
The Disconnect Factor: Cell Service Exists, But You Won't Care
Yes, there's cell service and wifi. We used it to load and share pictures and watch a movie at bedtime.
The rest of the time, we were in a bubble. No daily grind. No stress. Just animals, nature, and meeting new people.
My A-Ha Moment:
I realized I love horseback riding and want to do it more. And I don't have to go far from home for an all-inclusive experience that delivers this level of quality and peace.
Her A-Ha Moment:
During our walks, we talked about horses—how they made her feel, how she loved them, why they mattered to her. Conversations that wouldn't have happened at home with all the usual distractions.
Who Else Was There
Southern Cross attracts a mix: families with young kids, young adults, couples. Everyone was friendly—plenty of opportunities to interact at dinner or during rides, but also plenty of private moments when you wanted them.
Here's the telling detail: the ranch is primarily filled with repeat guests. That speaks volumes.
What Surprised Me Most
How sore we were. How rested we felt. How fulfilled we were by the sheer amount of horse time we got.
And how much I underestimated the value of just... stopping. Being in one place. Doing the same simple rhythm every day without rushing anywhere.
